Featured Article: Laura Dern for Town & Country November 2019

Laura Dern is the cover star of Town & Country’s November issue, on newsstands October 29th.

Dern is gearing up for two highly anticipated film premiere’s later this year – Marriage Story (in theaters Dec 6th) and Little Women (in theaters Dec 29th). Here for Town & Country, the Academy-Award nominated actress gets candid about the shifts toward fully-realized roles for women in Hollywood post-#MeToo, what she loves about her character, Nora, in a Marriage Story, and her process behind choosing roles to play. Plus, Big Little Lies co-star Reese Witherspoon shares what she and Dern first bonded over.

On her character, Nora, in her upcoming film Marriage Story:Nora is the turning of the screw in this piece in that they might have done it very differently if not for this one character.”

On what the characters she chooses to play each share: “I’ve always been drawn to characters that not only haven’t found their voice, they don’t know they’re entitled to one. That’s been a real theme to the women that I have fallen in love with.”

On the shift she’s noticed toward fully-realized roles for women in Hollywood post-#MeToo: “I’m being offered things that are very true about a woman’s sexuality. Even a decade ago when they might have thought, ‘But she’s a 50-year old actress – and cast a 27-year-old.’ [Now] there’s consideration for character and truth, and, I think, less fear.”

Reese Witherspoon on the Southern tradition her and Dern’s mother instilled in them: “They made us say please and thank you, yes ma’am, no sir, write thank-you notes, and always have a story to tell at any dinner party.” Images courtesy of Tom Schirmacher for Town & Country. (source)
