Featured Article: Vogue UK 2013 Covers Recap

Aah, Alexandra Shulman and her obsession to Kate Moss. The British supermodel landed at least a cover consistently almost every year since her debut in March 1993. In the past four years, she has landed sixth covers and twice this year alone (June and December). Those covers rounding up Kate‘s total of 34th time as cover girl for the magazine. Kate Moss even joined the magazine as Contributing Fashion Editor with her first story due to feature in the upcoming Spring issue. Hopefully Alexandra Shulman will feature other supermodels than Kate Moss like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington or perhaps she should take a risk and tap new crop of model such as Sam Rollinson.

Other than that, we are extremely happy that she gave more cover slots to models. From first timers Kate Upton, Cara Delevigne, Edie Campbell, Kati Nescher, to returning cover girls Freja Beha Erichsen and Daria Werbowy. Hopefully this trend will continue next year!

The rest of the cover stars are Beyoncé (first time cover girl for the mag) by Arthur Elgort, Helena Bonham Carter by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, Alexa Chung by Patrick Demarchelier, and our fave Claire Danes by Nathaniel Goldberg. Which one is your fave, guys?

Featured Article: Glamour US 2013 Covers Recap

After a so so line up last year, finally Glamour US got their mojo back! This year’s covers are more interesting than 2012.

Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway was the first actress to graced their front page, photographed by Alexei Hay (the New York-based photographer also snapped the September issue with Jennifer Aniston). One of our favourite covers was fronted by actress Zooey Deschanel. The New Girl leading lady was photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth, who also photographed most covers this year. Frankfurt born von Unwerth shot the total four out of twelve slots for the Cynthia Leive edited magazine. She shot Dakota Fanning for March, Pink for June, and Lily Collins for July.

After Anna Wintour was appointed as the artistic director of Condé Nast earlier this year, you can see that there’s a subtle change on Glamour covers. Even though the amount of text are still ridiculous, but towards the end of the year, they were more streamlined and doesn’t affected the main image of the cover star. One interesting fact, Lady Gaga posed in front of plain white background for Patrick Demarchelier on December issue, which reminds us of the magazine’s signature before they going through major make over last year. But this could be one time thing only. We gotta see what future issues brings.

In another news, Glamour recently named Paul Ritter, previously at their rival Elle, as their new Creative Director. We can expect new contribution from him in next year’s issue because Paul will start at the magazine on November 11th.

The remaining covers this year were featuring actresses Kate Hudson by Patrick Demarchelier; Hayden Panettiere by Peggy Sirota (love the strong summer vibe!); Kerry Washington also by Peggy Sirota; singer Rihanna by Terry Tsiolis (her retro curls were amazing), and boyband One Direction who posed together with model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley by Matt Irwin.

Featured Article: Vanity Fair 2013 Covers Recap

Vanity Fair started this year with one of our favourite covers from them. Some of the world’s funniest comedians and comediennes (we are talking about Jim Carrey, Melissa McCarthy, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Maya Rudolph amongs others!) were posed in front of Mark Seliger lens with hilariously ridiculous outfits. Not to mention that Judd Apatow guest edited the issue. So, it was a perfect Comedy Issue!

Another favourite from Vanity Fair is the August issue with first time cover star, Scandal‘s Kerry Washington who really deserves more major magazine front page slots in the future. She posed in a sexy white cut out bikini, half underwater by Norman Jean Roy. American actress Jennifer Lawrence landed the February issue before her Oscar winning moment (who can forget that historical time when she slipped on the stage!) and her cover came in perfect timing.

More Academy Award-related actors whose featured in this year’s line up were Ben Affleck–who directed this year’s Best Picture winner, Argo–and 2013 Best Actor nominee Bradley Cooper (with the lovely Emma Stone) for March, 1954 Best Actress winner Audrey Hepburn for May, 2009 Best Actor nominee Brad Pitt for June (our least fave cover of the year), and 2003 Best Actress winner Nicole Kidman for December.

The rest of the cover stars are singer Taylor Swift by Peter Lindbergh, actor Channing Tatum by Bruce Weber, the late Princess Diana by Mario Testino, model Kate Upton by Annie Leibovitz (celebrating their 100th anniversary issue), and rapper Jay Z by Mario Testino.

One thing we realized is that VF changed their bold masthead to be more vintage, classic yet slim since October issue. We are not complaining about it, as long as they keep producing good covers and attention-grabbing headlines. Sometimes the headlines were silly and too obvious (i.e The Wife Who Outfoxed Kristen Stewart in December), but it’s our guilty pleasure to see what will they write next.

Which one of this year’s line up is your favourite? You can also read our 2012, 2011 and 2010 review by clicking the respective links.
