Featured Article: InStyle US 2013 Covers Recap

Ariel Foxman as InStyle US editor in chief is still keeping the magazine’s trademarks on the cover: white background, white masthead logo with colored panel, and hot in-the-moment celebrities. We don’t mind those three, the only thing they should fix, in our opinion, is the amount of headlines. It’s to packed like the American edition of Marie Claire and Vogue. We just wish that the great images of the cover star wasn’t covered by the awkwardly placed headlines, especially on the hair.

The perfect cover example would be Zooey Deschanel‘s April issue. They put the majority of the headlines on one side, with small amount of text on the other side. But then again, text placement is always depends on the image they picked as the cover itself. They could do better, but we still appreciate what they’ve done this year.

On celebrity side, they chose actresses who got big movies/series/project coming out close to the magazine published date such as Amanda Seyfried who starred in Les Miserables, trio of Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, and Michelle Williams who were promoting Oz The Great and Powerful, Zooey Deschanel of New Girl, Julianne Moore of Carrie remake, Taylor Swift who performed on Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show two days ago, and The Hunger Games‘ leading girl, Jennifer Lawrence (the cover was shot before she cut her hair).

Michaelangelo di Battista, Giampaolo Sgura, and Dusan Reljin are the three photographers who were hired by InStyle to shot their covers in 2013. Italian born di Battista photographed the March issue with Rachel, Mila and Michelle, May issue with Emily Blunt, September issue with Drew Barrymore, and December issue with Jennifer Lawrence.

Fellow Italian Giampaolo Sgura shot the April issue with Zooey Deschanel, August with Olivia Wilde, October with Julianne Moore, and November with Taylor Swift. Last but not least, Dusan Reljin, who was born in Serbia and is a Norwegian citizen, snapped the same amount of covers for the magazine with cover stars Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, and Salma Hayek.

Featured Article: Marie Claire US 2013 Covers Recap

Marie Claire US got two Academy Award Best Actress winners as their cover stars this year. Natalie Portman who won the award for her dramatic role in Black Swan wore Dior on the magazine’s November cover, shot by Tesh. While Julia Roberts who got her Oscar from Erin Brockovich, made a notable cover appearance for Marie Claire‘s December issue photographed by Cedric Buchet.

Another Oscar-related actress on the line up is Keira Knightley, who graced their important March issue shot by Nathaniel Goldberg. She was nominated for the same category as Natalie and Julia back in 2005 for Pride and Prejudice. On the side note, May issue cover star Scarlett Johansson may haven’t received a nomination for Oscar, yet, but she was a presenter for the prestigious event back in 2011.

The majority of Marie Claire‘s cover stars this year were actresses. From Glee star Lea Michele, Tron Legacy heroine Olivia Wilde, the quirky yet lovely New Girl and (500) Days of Summer protagonist Zooey Deschanel, and Disney starlet Vanessa Hudgens. Three of them were posed in front of Tesh‘s lens (he shot the total 5 slots this year!), while the other one was photographed by Andreas Sjödin.

Former Victoria’s Secret Angel and Project Runway host Heidi Klum, American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, TV personality and author Lauren Conrad, and singer/rapper Nicki Minaj rounding up the 12 cover stars from the monthly women’s publication edited by Anne Fulenwider.

Featured Article: Marie Claire UK 2013 Covers Recap

As always, Marie Claire UK mixed their covers line up with reprints and their own photoshoots. For example, they’ve got Gwen Stefani, Emma Watson, Keira Knightly, Diane Kruger, Zooey Deschanel, and Scarlett Johansson from the reprint section. They manage to pick the best images from the original publication and use it for their own advantages. Gwen Stefani and Scarlett Johansson images were our favourite from the bunch.

The rest of the covers were not bad either. From actresses Megan Fox, Mila Kunis, Gemma Arterton, and Lena Dunham (rumour has it that she will have an upcoming Vogue US cover), to singer Alicia Keys and Jessie J. Marie Claire UK used celebrities to sell the magazine and we are not complaining as long as they keep producing good covers which suits their demographic perfectly.

Featured Article: Glamour US 2013 Covers Recap

After a so so line up last year, finally Glamour US got their mojo back! This year’s covers are more interesting than 2012.

Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway was the first actress to graced their front page, photographed by Alexei Hay (the New York-based photographer also snapped the September issue with Jennifer Aniston). One of our favourite covers was fronted by actress Zooey Deschanel. The New Girl leading lady was photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth, who also photographed most covers this year. Frankfurt born von Unwerth shot the total four out of twelve slots for the Cynthia Leive edited magazine. She shot Dakota Fanning for March, Pink for June, and Lily Collins for July.

After Anna Wintour was appointed as the artistic director of Condé Nast earlier this year, you can see that there’s a subtle change on Glamour covers. Even though the amount of text are still ridiculous, but towards the end of the year, they were more streamlined and doesn’t affected the main image of the cover star. One interesting fact, Lady Gaga posed in front of plain white background for Patrick Demarchelier on December issue, which reminds us of the magazine’s signature before they going through major make over last year. But this could be one time thing only. We gotta see what future issues brings.

In another news, Glamour recently named Paul Ritter, previously at their rival Elle, as their new Creative Director. We can expect new contribution from him in next year’s issue because Paul will start at the magazine on November 11th.

The remaining covers this year were featuring actresses Kate Hudson by Patrick Demarchelier; Hayden Panettiere by Peggy Sirota (love the strong summer vibe!); Kerry Washington also by Peggy Sirota; singer Rihanna by Terry Tsiolis (her retro curls were amazing), and boyband One Direction who posed together with model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley by Matt Irwin.

Featured Article: Glamour UK 2013 Covers Recap

Glamour UK has less covers this year, but with better cover stars. They tapped popular singers (Rita Ora, Jessie J, Nicole Scherzinger, Myleene Klass—who’s famous locally, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry (the cover was “inspired” by the February 1995 issue of Vogue Paris, by Mario Testino).

They also featured the current in demand actresses and actor for their 2013 cover slots (Emma Stone, Diane Kruger, January Jones, Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Daniel Radcliffe, Zooey Deschanel, Rebel Wilson—in a cover inspired by Victoria Beckham’s Glamour US version, and Lily Collins).

Fun fact, there is no Cheryl Cole cover for the first time since 2010! They still heavy on the text, but at least giving us interesting color palette, unlike last year’s. Our favourite from Glamour UK this year would be Jessica Alba’s May issue (love her striking pose), Daniel Radcliffe’s July, and Taylor Swift’s November cover.
