Ariel Foxman as InStyle US editor in chief is still keeping the magazine’s trademarks on the cover: white background, white masthead logo with colored panel, and hot in-the-moment celebrities. We don’t mind those three, the only thing they should fix, in our opinion, is the amount of headlines. It’s to packed like the American edition of Marie Claire and Vogue. We just wish that the great images of the cover star wasn’t covered by the awkwardly placed headlines, especially on the hair.
The perfect cover example would be Zooey Deschanel‘s April issue. They put the majority of the headlines on one side, with small amount of text on the other side. But then again, text placement is always depends on the image they picked as the cover itself. They could do better, but we still appreciate what they’ve done this year.
On celebrity side, they chose actresses who got big movies/series/project coming out close to the magazine published date such as Amanda Seyfried who starred in Les Miserables, trio of Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, and Michelle Williams who were promoting Oz The Great and Powerful, Zooey Deschanel of New Girl, Julianne Moore of Carrie remake, Taylor Swift who performed on Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show two days ago, and The Hunger Games‘ leading girl, Jennifer Lawrence (the cover was shot before she cut her hair).
Michaelangelo di Battista, Giampaolo Sgura, and Dusan Reljin are the three photographers who were hired by InStyle to shot their covers in 2013. Italian born di Battista photographed the March issue with Rachel, Mila and Michelle, May issue with Emily Blunt, September issue with Drew Barrymore, and December issue with Jennifer Lawrence.
Fellow Italian Giampaolo Sgura shot the April issue with Zooey Deschanel, August with Olivia Wilde, October with Julianne Moore, and November with Taylor Swift. Last but not least, Dusan Reljin, who was born in Serbia and is a Norwegian citizen, snapped the same amount of covers for the magazine with cover stars Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, and Salma Hayek.
There are some hit and miss in this year’s Bazaar UK covers line up. For example, Anne Hathaway‘s February and Scarlett Johansson‘s October issue. They could’ve done so much better with such great actresses.
It seems like elegant minimalism is the theme for their newsstand covers in 2013. Soft color tones, safe model-ish poses, and well known cover stars are their signatures this year.
Some standout newsstand covers from this monthly fashion publication edited by Justine Picardie were featuring Karen Elson‘s strong pose by Alexi Lubomirski, Carey Mulligan‘s serene face by Tom Allen, Stella Tennant‘s dreamy cover by Cathleen Naundorf, Jennifer Lawrence‘s striking feature by Ben Hassett, and Cate Blanchett‘s elegant yet poised image shot also by Ben Hassett.
Harper’s Bazaar UK presented at least 21 version of subscriber covers this year. From those minimalist images of famous faces (Sienna Miller, Michelle Dockery, Natalia Vodianova, Kate Winslet, Lara Stone, Karl Lagerfeld + Choupette, and Dree Hemmingway), to the amazing images with vintage feeling from Cathleen Naundorf, to the artsy illustration by the talented Gary Hume.
Craig McDean snapped the cover.
