Featured Article: Dewi Fashion Knights 2012

The Next Chapter was the title of the fifth edition from Dewi Fashion Knights, held last night, Friday, November 09th 2012 at Fashion Loft, Plaza Senayan Level 5, Jakarta.

Fashion Loft was not originally located at the fifth floor of the famous mall, but it was outside of the mall, on a huge tent. The venue was moved due to extremely bad weather that hit Jakarta for the past week. DFK supposedly the major fashion show event that closed JFW, but the weather problem caused the extension of Jakarta Fashion Week 2013 until Monday, November 12th.

This year, Dewi Magazine chose five prominent Indonesian designers to translates their ideas on “The Next Chapter” of their collection, which is ready to wear. Priyo Oktaviano, Sapto Djojokartiko (he was one of the designers from last year’s DFK), Deden Siswanto, Oscar Lawalata, and Ghea Panggabean are this year’s line up. They finally presented their latest prêt-à-porter collection inside the full-house venue around 10pm, filled with enthusiastic Jakarta’s fashionistas and socialites, who have been waiting for almost an hour in hot and packed foyer. Thank God for those martinis and fruit iced teas that keeps on flowing.

Priyo Oktaviano with his SPOUS label, opened the event with such an edgy and androgyny collection entitled Ultra Mod. Black and white dominates the collection. He twisted the basic color palettes with geometric prints, menswear-inspired cutting, cowboy hats, ruffles, punk-inspired hair do, and those head-turning boots heels that was also worn by the male models.

Vastu Vidya from Sapto Djojokartiko was the next collection out at DFK. The gorgeous yet delicate collection filled with exquisite laser cut detailing and crowns, fabrics mixing, wooden and woven accessories (clutch, lacy shoes with tassels, and sunglasses), puffy sleeves and some medieval inspired cutting. He presented less drama this year compared to that towering high steel shoes from last year that made lot of people hold their breath. Deden Siswanto combined traditional fabrics with modern cutting for his In The Dim Lights sequence. He mixed various patterns of batik with other luscious fabrics and incorporates it with unusual shapes to create the stunningly rich earthy colored collection. We’re drooling over the patent leather gladiator sandals.

Oscar Lawalata obviously got his inspiration from the 20s decade with it’s flapper dresses and fringes because that’s what his “My Name Is 20s” collection all about. Fringes were the vocal point from his latest collection, but he doesn’t let it bores you because the dresses, that looks great in motion, comes in various precious stone colors and some trompe l’oeil details. Last but not least Ghea Panggabean. The respected fashion designer, wowed the guest with the lavish velvet and silk ensemble in maroon, black, and gold, that still true to her signature ethnic looks. Javanese-inspired carving on the accessories completed her Symbolism collection.

Congratulations to Dewi Magazine and Jakarta Fashion Week for another great year of Dewi Fashion Knights. We can’t wait to see who’s gonna fronting next year’s line up!

Backstage Images of Batik Danar Hadi 2011 Fashion Show

Me and Paula Verhoeven

Batik Danar Hadi, the powerhouse label famously known of their batik collections just held a fashion show “The Glory of Batik” collaborating with five Indonesian foremost fashion designers: Oscar Lawalata, Carmanita, Ghea Panggabean, Hutama Adhi and Sapto Djojokartiko at The Ritz-Carlton Pacific Place, Jakarta, Indonesia on April 28th, 2011.

Each designers presented sixteen collections using the exquisite batik printed fabrics with their own imaginations. The fashion show made me love this beautiful cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique even more! Of course we still have that ubër famous let’s-wear-batik-every-friday action, but it was more than that. It’s about appreciating our Indonesian heritage and take it to the next level! I bet you still remember how international designer, Dries Van Noten translated it to a chic collections for his Spring Summer 2010 show in Paris back in October 2009.

From the casual parang printed batik dresses by Oscar Lawalata (oh, don’t forget to check out those batik turbans!); the formal male collections by Danar Hadi Men; to the glamourous evening gowns with sequins and beads detailing by Sapto Djojokartiko, proves that the beautiful fabrics can be very versatile!

As usual, I made a visit to the backstage before and after the show to took pictures of my favourite subject : models. Twenty five female models and eight male models walked the runway with live performances from Lea Simanjuntak (in Danar Hadi and Hutama Adhi dresses), Marcel (wearing Danar Hadi and Carmanita), Rossa (in Oscar Lawalata and Sapto Djojokartiko) and Ruth Sahanaya (wearing Danar Hadi and Ghea Panggabean).

Some of the models who walked for the shows are Paula Verhoeven (one of my favourite); Christina (she proved that she’s a professional model by still walked the show even though she’s not feeling well. Get well soon dear!); Nadya; Tya; Dhining; Whulandary Herman (the winner of Best Fashion Model at the 2010 Fashion Asia Award in China); Frans (who’s also an actor); Thiago; Thomas (1st runner up of L-Men of The Year 2010); Karina; Masha; Sharlotta Senk; Ilmira (her actor husband, Teuku Zacky, also walked for the show) and JIM Models girls: Sarah, Pamela, Mega, Prinka, Filant and Ksenia (the main girl for Elle Indonesia 3rd anniversary editorials!)

Enjoy the images below and please forgive the blurry images. Art is way better in taking photographs but unfortunately he’s overseas at the moment. He’ll be back this October 😉
