Featured Article: Michelle Obama for Elle US December 2018

In advance of the release of her highly anticipated memoir, Becoming, the former First Lady, Michelle Obama (photographed by Miller Mobley wearing Dior) stars on the December cover of ELLE US and gets candid with Oprah Winfrey about her struggles with Barack, the threats to her children’s lives, and her vow to be a force for good.

The image is styled by Meredith Koop with hair and makeup by Yene Damtew and Carl Ray.

On Donald Trump’s birther claims: “In order for my children to have a normal life, even though they had security, they were in the world in a way that we weren’t. To think that some crazed person might be ginned up to think my husband was a threat to the country’s security; and to know that my children, every day, had to go to a school, and soccer games, parties, and travel; to think that this person would not take into account that this was not a game—that’s something that I want the country to understand. I want the country to take this in, in a way I didn’t say out loud, but I am saying now. It was reckless, it put my family in danger, and it wasn’t true. And he knew it wasn’t true.”

On going to counseling with her husband: “It was about me exploring my sense of happiness. What clicked in me was that I need support and I need some from him. But I needed to figure out how to build my life in a way that works for me.”

On the pressure of being the first black family: “We felt the pressure from the minute we started to run. First of all, we had to convince our base that a black man could win. It wasn’t even winning over Iowa. We first had to win over black people. Because black people like my grandparents—they never believed this could happen. They wanted it for us. But their lives had told them, “No. Never.” Hillary was the safer bet for them, because she was known. Opening hearts up to the hope that America would put down its racism for a black man—I think that hurt too much. It wasn’t until Barack won Iowa that people thought, Okay. Maybe so.” (source)

Featured Article: Vogue US 2013 Covers Recap

In 2013, Vogue US had a quite good year, cover wise.

Anna Wintour finally gave the cover slot for the much deserving celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain (both were photographed by Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz respectively). Anna also gave buxom model Kate Upton her first ever Vogue US front page spot. Lots of people hated the news when they first heard about the rumor, but the result was suprisingly good. She wears Dolce & Gabbana on the cover that was shot by Mario Testino. Now we just have to wait and see if the rumour of Girls‘ creator and leading lady, Lena Dunham lands the upcoming cover of the magazine true or not.

Peruvian Mario Testino is one of Anna‘s favourite photographers, and this year the 59 year old photographed two more covers other than Jen-Law and Kate Upton. He shot The Great Gatsby actress Carey Mulligan and two-time cover star (in a lovely chartreuse Oscar De La Renta dress) for May, and Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet for November issue.

Mario Testino is not the only one who repeats the cover stint for the monthly fashion bible, because 64 year old American Annie Leibovitz also shot several covers besides our favourite Jessica Chastain‘s December issue. She photographed the January issue with Gwen Stefani in Saint Laurent, April with Michelle Obama in Reed Krakoff (another favourite!), July with Katy Perry in Rodarte, and August with Claire Danes in Burberry Prorsum.

Fashion photographers David Sims (born in UK), Patrick Demarchelier (French), and Peter Lindbergh (German) shot the rest of the cover slots this year with Rooney Mara, Beyoncé, and Sandra Bullock respectively.

Michelle Obama for Vogue US April 2013

The 49 year old First Lady of America is landed her second cover slot for Vogue US (click here for her first cover), once again photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

Michelle Obama wears a sleeveless dark cerulean dress by Reed Krakoff with eggplant panelling. We love how Anna Wintour (congrats on her new position as Condé Nast‘s artistic director) decided to skip the banner on the usual top left and uses less headlines to match the gorgeously bold color palettes.
