The magazine releases its annual Philanthropy Issue (on newsstands today) featuring four cover stars: Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves, Robert F. Smith, Agnes Gund, and an illustrated cover by Maira Kalman.
Inside the issue, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves open up about their Just Keep Livin’ Foundation, a non-profit they founded in 2008 to empower high school students to lead active lives and make healthy choices. McConaughey and Alves also share the teachings they impart on their kids and what makes them want to give back.
Robert F. Smith, the software titan and businessman, made headlines in 2019 when he surprised the graduating class of Morehouse University with a $40M check to pay off college tuitions. Smith, who ranks third on the Forbes global list of Black billionaires, speaks to how his father shaped his philanthropic roots and more. At the time of this interview, Smith was working with Apple and AT&T to get internet access and smartphones to children from low-income families so they could participate in remote learning.
Agnes Gund, the philanthropist and art patron, gets candid about her “Art for Justice” fund which gives grants to artists and advocates working on the crisis of American mass incarceration. But her philanthropy doesn’t end there. “Aggie didn’t simply make one of the largest single donations to comprehensive criminal justice reform we’ve ever seen, she did the uncomfortable things activists do,” says lawyer and social justice advocate Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative.
Finally, Israeli-born American illustrator Maira Kalman illustrated her cover as an homage to gratitude in a difficult season. (source)
