Featured Article: Margot Robbie for Harper’s Bazaar US December 2018/January 2019

With her Oscar-worthy portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots and a host of other film and TV projects in the works, 28-year-old actress Margot Robbie is on top of the world—quite literally, in the latest issue of Harper’s BAZAAR, the cover images are photographed by Camilla Akrans, styled by Charles Varenne with hair and makeup by Bryce Scarlett and Pati Dubroff, manicurist Ashlie Johnson.

On her metamorphosis into Queen Elizabeth I while filming Mary Queen of Scots: “Normally there’s someone who steps in and says, ‘No, keep all the girls looking pretty!’ But Josie Rourke, the director, was keen to explore how Queen Elizabeth’s looks affected her relationships, and everyone had the guts to do it.”

On the inspiration to form her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, in 2014: “When we set out to create our company, it was sort of a new idea, but then in response to the #MeToo conversation it was all that anyone was talking about. People were like, ‘Why don’t we make movies for women?’ Uh, what a revelation, right?”

On refusing to be typecast by her beauty early on: “When I was trying to make my name as an actress, creative roles for women were limited. I didn’t want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend—just a catalyst for the male story line. It was uninspiring.” (source)

Elle US February cover star Margot Robbie is interviewed by her I, Tonya co-star, Allison Janney, where she discusses her future as a director, the highlight of her career and what it was like playing Tonya Harding:

On fear of playing a real-life character: “…playing Tonya [Harding], who’s very much alive and is widely documented, can be more intimidating.”

On directing: “I still love acting. But I’ve spent the last 10 years on a film set, and I realized that if I am pouring my heart and soul into a film, I want to be one of those voices in the conversation making decisions.”

On the first highlight of her career: “When I got to New York for the first time, I took my first paycheck, walked straight into Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue, and bought an airplane charm that goes on my bracelet. It was the best feeling ever. I got my little blue box, and I got it for myself.”

On which skill she wants to master: “I recently bought fire-twirling poles, because I really want to get good at it. When I was backpacking in the Philippines, there were heaps of fire twirlers on the beach, and it was so cool. I was like, Wow, I really want to do that!”

Styling by Samira Nasr, hair and makeup by Renato Campora and Pati Dubroff. (source)
