Ariel Foxman as InStyle US editor in chief is still keeping the magazine’s trademarks on the cover: white background, white masthead logo with colored panel, and hot in-the-moment celebrities. We don’t mind those three, the only thing they should fix, in our opinion, is the amount of headlines. It’s to packed like the American edition of Marie Claire and Vogue. We just wish that the great images of the cover star wasn’t covered by the awkwardly placed headlines, especially on the hair.
The perfect cover example would be Zooey Deschanel‘s April issue. They put the majority of the headlines on one side, with small amount of text on the other side. But then again, text placement is always depends on the image they picked as the cover itself. They could do better, but we still appreciate what they’ve done this year.
On celebrity side, they chose actresses who got big movies/series/project coming out close to the magazine published date such as Amanda Seyfried who starred in Les Miserables, trio of Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, and Michelle Williams who were promoting Oz The Great and Powerful, Zooey Deschanel of New Girl, Julianne Moore of Carrie remake, Taylor Swift who performed on Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show two days ago, and The Hunger Games‘ leading girl, Jennifer Lawrence (the cover was shot before she cut her hair).
Michaelangelo di Battista, Giampaolo Sgura, and Dusan Reljin are the three photographers who were hired by InStyle to shot their covers in 2013. Italian born di Battista photographed the March issue with Rachel, Mila and Michelle, May issue with Emily Blunt, September issue with Drew Barrymore, and December issue with Jennifer Lawrence.
Fellow Italian Giampaolo Sgura shot the April issue with Zooey Deschanel, August with Olivia Wilde, October with Julianne Moore, and November with Taylor Swift. Last but not least, Dusan Reljin, who was born in Serbia and is a Norwegian citizen, snapped the same amount of covers for the magazine with cover stars Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, and Salma Hayek.
Actress Kate Bosworth was the first cover star for Harper’s Bazaar Australia this year. The 30 year old American was photographed by Steven Chee. Australian based Chee also photographed fellow actress Cate Blanchett on a black backdrop for the magazine’s May issue. We love both images by him.
Similar image where the sexy Scarlett Johansson posed in front of black background was also the magazine cover for September issue, but this was shot by Karl Lagerfeld with styling works by Carine Roitfeld. She also styled yet another minimalist cover featuring Lara Stone, shot by Kacper Kasprzyk, for March (click here to view 14 other covers by well known designers for the magazine’s anniversary issue!). Both of the images were taken from Carine‘s editorial that was published in Harper’s Bazaar internationally.
Former Miss Universe 2004 and the host of the recent season of Australia’s Next Top Model (she’s recently renewed her AusNTM hosting stint for another season), Jennifer Hawkins landed the February cover slot, shot by Simon Lekias. Mr.Lekias also photographed the December issue with homegrown actress, Nicole Kidman who has been featured on the cover consistently for the past three years. The winner of AusNTM, Melissa Juratowitch is featured on the November cover, as her winning prize. The 16 year old wears Tom Ford Fall Winter 2013 on the image that was snapped by Simon Upton (Upton also photographed Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for October issue).
InStyle UK really stepping up their covers this year. Even though they still use their signature soft pale mastheads and headlines, but the cover star choice, the styling and the pose were perfect!
They started with Academy Award-nominated actress Jessica Chastain who looks amazing in cropped top and fiery hair posing in front of Micaela Rossato‘s lens for February issue. New York based Rossato (who was born in Cordoba, Argentina) also photographed two other cover slots with Rebecca Hall and Naomi Watts, which we love.
We also love the following covers featuring model Agyness Deyn (by Rankin), Taylor Swift (by Karen Collins), Zoe Saldana (by Damon Heath), and Kate Bosworth (by Cedric Buchet). The rest of the cover stars this year are singer Cheryl Cole (by David Vasiljevic), and three brilliant actresses: Chloë Grace Moretz, Drew Barrymore, and Julianne Moore who were snapped by Sofia Sanchez & Mauro Mongiello, Michelangelo di Battista, and Giampaolo Sgura respectively.
The only glitch was on the first issue of 2013. The worst cover of the year, or even in their history, goes to Gwyneth Paltrow’s January issue by Giampaolo Sgura. See the image here, and you’ll see what we are talking about. Worst photoshop, ever!
