Marie Claire US releases its April 2019 ‘Change Makers’ issue featuring Ava DuVernay, Jessica Chastain, and Constance Wu (out on newsstands March 26th).
The three cover stars are coming together for MC to showcase what power looks like in 2019. As actresses, activists, and filmmakers each are fighting for inclusion, representation, and equality to shape the future of Hollywood. Inside the cover story, DuVernay opens up about her personal and professional rise as a groundbreaking filmmaker and also shares what she considers her biggest career mistake so far. Wu holds nothing back on how she defines diversity and why women have to compete with one another for roles. Chastain shares when she gave up trying please others and the criticism she’s faced on being so outspoken.
Ava DuVernay On honoring her craft before fame: “I didn’t have dreams or designs that a studio would want to make my work, that any awards body or critical community would embrace my work. In many ways, that lack of attention put me in a really good place. No one’s going to watch it anyway, so I may as well make what I want.”
Constance Wu On defining diversity: “Diversity isn’t just ‘Let’s have people of color supporting this white person’s story.’”
On competition among actresses: “People say women are inherently bitchy and competitive. But anybody will be competitive if there’s only one seat at the table.”
Jessica Chastain On criticism for being outspoken: “I’ve had people tell me, ‘You need to be a little more quiet with all this woman talk.’” Image courtesy of Marie Claire. (source)
