Featured Article: Vanity Fair 2013 Covers Recap

Vanity Fair started this year with one of our favourite covers from them. Some of the world’s funniest comedians and comediennes (we are talking about Jim Carrey, Melissa McCarthy, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Maya Rudolph amongs others!) were posed in front of Mark Seliger lens with hilariously ridiculous outfits. Not to mention that Judd Apatow guest edited the issue. So, it was a perfect Comedy Issue!

Another favourite from Vanity Fair is the August issue with first time cover star, Scandal‘s Kerry Washington who really deserves more major magazine front page slots in the future. She posed in a sexy white cut out bikini, half underwater by Norman Jean Roy. American actress Jennifer Lawrence landed the February issue before her Oscar winning moment (who can forget that historical time when she slipped on the stage!) and her cover came in perfect timing.

More Academy Award-related actors whose featured in this year’s line up were Ben Affleck–who directed this year’s Best Picture winner, Argo–and 2013 Best Actor nominee Bradley Cooper (with the lovely Emma Stone) for March, 1954 Best Actress winner Audrey Hepburn for May, 2009 Best Actor nominee Brad Pitt for June (our least fave cover of the year), and 2003 Best Actress winner Nicole Kidman for December.

The rest of the cover stars are singer Taylor Swift by Peter Lindbergh, actor Channing Tatum by Bruce Weber, the late Princess Diana by Mario Testino, model Kate Upton by Annie Leibovitz (celebrating their 100th anniversary issue), and rapper Jay Z by Mario Testino.

One thing we realized is that VF changed their bold masthead to be more vintage, classic yet slim since October issue. We are not complaining about it, as long as they keep producing good covers and attention-grabbing headlines. Sometimes the headlines were silly and too obvious (i.e The Wife Who Outfoxed Kristen Stewart in December), but it’s our guilty pleasure to see what will they write next.

Featured Article: GQ UK 2012 Covers Recap

It is more exciting to waiting every month and see what GQ UK brings on their covers than the US version. Because GQ UK works with different photographers and setting and concept almost every single months. Unlike their US brother that always with the boring white backdrop and suited-up cover stars.

Some of the highlights from this year that caught our attention are Sam Taylor Wood‘s sephia-colored January cover featuring Daniel Craig, who also featured on one out of six front pages of the magazine’s November issue that celebrating 50th anniversary of the iconic James Bond (the other cover stars are previous Bond casts–George Lazenby, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Sean Connery, and Timothy Dalton).

We love Olivia Wilde‘s cute and sexy April cover by Gavin Bond, but of course the other cover version featuring comedians Ricky Gervais, Michael McIntyre, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Chris Rock, is definitely not on our “best cover” list. Our final favourite front pages from GQ UK this year are featuring three gorgeous, lovely yet sexy ladies: Homeland‘s Claire Danes for September issue by Simon Emmett; singer Lana Del Rey (naked!) for October issue by Mariano Vivanco; and last but not least, Twilight star Ashley Greene for December issue by Benny Horne. They did great jobs with the stunning images!

The rest of the cover stars for this year’s line up including rising actor Michael Fassbender; Academy-Award nominated actress Keira Knightley; Victoria Secret’s Angel from South Africa, Candice Swanepoel; singer Cheryl Cole; the new Peter Parker, Andrew Garfield; the new Bond girl from French, Bérénice Marlohe; stage, tv and film actor James Corden; Mad Men‘s John Slattery, singer Robbie Williams; and rapper Tinie Tempah.

Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway & James Franco for Vanity Fair US March 2011

For their Annual Hollywood Issue (this years remarks their 17th edition), Vanity Fair gathered some of current hottest, young and most talented movie stars : Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Jame Franco (Hathaway and Oscar nominee Franco are co hosting this years Oscar!), Jennifer Lawrence (this year Oscar nominee), Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg (third this year’s Oscar nominee in this cover!), Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall (he’s NOT young and NOT a new actor, why is he on the cover???), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield (remember how he was struggling to “introduced” The Social Network on this year’s Golden Globe?), Rashida Jones (in Tom Ford), Garrett Hedlund and Noomi Rapace (she almost unrecognizable here!!). This cover was photographed by contributing photographer Norman Jean Roy which they usually hired Annie Leibovitz. Where is she by the way…

“We wanted to evoke the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, an era of smoky, alluring elegance. We had the gentlemen looking dashing in black tie, whilst the ladies were radiant in spring’s gowns—from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent—and glittering with diamonds from Chanel and other arbiters of glamour.” says fashion and style director Jessica Diehl.
