Featured Article: Jon Bernthal for Esquire US February 2018

41-year-old American actor Jon Bernthal spent time in jail as a teenager, was menaced at gunpoint in Moscow in his twenties, and nearly killed a man when he was thirty-two. As he takes on his biggest role since The Walking Dead—starring on Netflix’s new series The PunisherBernthal talks to Esquire US about owning guns, his role on The Punisher, his relationship with Oliver Stone, one thing he’s always been afraid of, and how he finally learned to keep his demons at bay.

· On what it’s like to work with him on set of The Punisher: “Ask people on set and they’ll say I’m difficult. But it’s not about my trailer or the food; it’s always about making the role make sense.”

· Responding to the Punisher symbol being spotted on military helmets in Iraq and biker jackets, and seen on the shoulders of alt-right protesters at the white-supremacy rally in Charlottesville, VA: “I feel honored to play a guy who people putting their life on the line identify with.” And the alt-righters? “Fuck them.”

· On guns and gun control: “I’m a gun owner. I have a gun in my house to keep my family safe. I’m trained in that gun’s use. I know how to keep it away from my kids, and I know how to use it if I need to. Should there be a way that a guy with mental issues like the asshole in Texas can’t get guns? Absolutely. We have to have a dialogue, and that’s not happening.”

· Before Bernthal and Oliver Stone became good friends, the actor snapped at the director during the filming of World Trade Center: One day during filming [Stone] screamed that the actor’s takes were either too over-the-top or too tepid. Eventually, Stone walked over from the video village and shouted at Bernthal and a few other actors. “You are all so fucking vain,” Stone said. He turned to Bernthal and jabbed a finger in his face. “And you are the worst.” Bernthal slapped the director’s hand away. “Let me tell you something, dude. You might be Oliver Stone, but I will beat your fucking ass right here on this set. In front of everybody here, I will beat your ass. You got that?” Stone retreated. Nicolas Cage, one of the stars of the film, wandered over and said, “Wow, man, there was adversity and you threw more adversity at it.”

· One reason he hasn’t settled into being a superhero: “You talk about Leo, you talk about Brad, the guys I really, really respect—and they have all kind of stayed clear of the superhero stuff.”

· What he hopes for his kids, particularly his sons: “I want them to see kindness as masculine, not a sign of weakness.”

Featured Article: Two Covers of Cosmopolitan US February 2018

Riverdale stars Camila Mendes (23), and Lili Reinhart (21) are a super close squad of two onscreen and IRL, and interview each other in the February 2018 issue of Cosmopolitan US (on newsstands January 09th), chatting candidly about love, sex, romance, insecurities, and a whole lot more.

The covers are photographed by Eric Ray Davidson with styling by James Worthington DeMolet.

On the plotlines they’d write for their Riverdale characters, Betty and Veronica:

· CAMILA: “I want to see [Veronica] challenged—I want to see her at her breaking point… love strong characters and they’re fun to play, but I think we’ve seen a lot of strong Veronica. It would be interesting to see her in a different light. I want to see her weak and defeated. I want to see her fail. What do you want to happen for Betty?”

· LILI: “I want to see [Betty] have a good time. Maybe not having phone calls on the reg with a serial killer, you know? I want her to let her hair down—and not just as a reaction to being depressed and stressed out. Betty didn’t even do [Riverdale’s fictional party drug] Jingle Jangle… I also want to see her explore her sexuality. She never gets to—she’s always stressed! Poor girl.”

On sexual assault and Hollywood:

· LILI: “Being a young woman in Hollywood is intimidating. I came forward on my Tumblr to talk about my sexual assault story [As a teenager, Lili went on a date with an older coworker who tried to force himself on her], and I know you’ve dealt with sexual assault as well. In my situation, I know how powerless I felt, because it was my career on the line. It’s hard not to think that your next move dictates your career—aka the rest of your life.”

· CAMILA: “Especially because in most of these accounts—at least until recently—people have spoken up and then nothing’s done about it. And it’s not just Hollywood.”

· LILI: “Not at all. It’s in every profession and at every age. It’s represented in our show—it happens to high school girls. We have to start thinking about why these men do this. And how do we teach the next generation that no one has that power over someone else?”

· CAMILA: “How to just respect other human beings. If I could go back to before I started Riverdale, I would tell myself to speak up when I felt like something wasn’t right. To use my voice and know that it’s worth hearing.”

On sexuality and insecurities:

· LILI: “I’m very open sexually.”

· CAMILA: “That’s something that we bonded about. I didn’t initially think you would be willing to talk about sex. And then once we started, I was like, “Oh my god!””

· LILI: “I love to talk about it. It’s interesting—one big insecurity I had to get past was when the person I’m with has had more sexual experiences than I have and has been in love more than I have. It’s mainly sexual though—I find myself thinking that they’re comparing me to their ex-lovers. I know it’s a stupid insecurity, because I can’t control someone’s past or dictate who they slept with before me…and besides, they’re with me for a reason.”

On what they think the biggest misconceptions about sex are:

· CAMILA: “I’ve never liked this idea of “don’t give him everything.” Like you’ve given someone all of yourself by having sex with them. What’s valuable to me is giving you my love and my intimacy. What about you?”

· LILI: “The idea that sex is going to be the same with everyone—that’s a misconception. That’s how I felt when I lost my virginity—I was like, “So this is sex!” And then you have sex with someone else, and you’re like, “Holy shit— this is so different.” What you want, what feels good to you—it’s all going to change with every partner you have.”

· CAMILA: “I want to tell [guys], “Don’t have sex at me—have sex with me.” I want them to understand that it’s so much better when we’re connected.” (source)

Featured Article: Hailee Steinfeld for Marie Claire US February 2018

With a booming music career—more than 1.4 billion streams on Spotify, the lead single on the upcoming Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack—and an acting resume that already includes Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, there’s nothing can stop this young starlet! Inside the February issue of Marie Claire US, Steinfeld opens up about finding love, advice she would give to her younger self, using her platform for good, and many more.

On pursuing her music career: “As an actor, I’m masked by characters, protected by them. But as a musician, it’s my story, my voice, my face. It’s me on that stage talking about that horrible experience I went through and [saying,] ‘Here, I’m going to sing about it.’ It’s such a different kind of vulnerable. To connect with fans, there’s pressure in feeling like I have to do things that I’m uncomfortable with, in terms of opening up enough about myself.”

On finding love: “I’m trying to protect myself and have a bit of a guard up, but I also want to fall in love and know why love hurts.”

Advice she’d give to her younger self: “Listen to yourself. So many people will try and steer you in a certain direction— not saying that that’s the wrong direction at all—but you have to know what’s right for you. Trust yourself, follow your heart, and do what makes you happy. Don’t forget to live for yourself.”

On using her platform for good: “I’ve worked hard and gotten to a place where I have a voice: How can I use it? What can I, as a human, as an artist, do?”
