Featured Article: Vogue Spain 2013 Covers Recap

Eight out of twelve cover girls of Vogue Spain this year are related to Victoria’s Secret. They got three current Victoria’s Secret Angels, one former Angel, and four models who have walked the sexy annual fashion show.

The sultry Edita Vilkeviciute is one of the magazine’s favourite girls, and she cemented her status by landed yet another cover for the magazine. The 24 year old Lithuanian who walked Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2008, 2009 and 2010 was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier (he also shot Daria Werbowy‘s July cover) for the January issue. Polish topmodel Anja Rubik, who shared the runway with Edita in VSFS 2009 and 2010 (also 2011), graced the magazine’s June issue by Giampaolo Sgura.

Estonian Karmen Pedaru and Puerto Rican Joan Smalls started their VSFS debut in 2011 (Joan also walked in 2012 and 2013), and both landed Vogue Spain covers for August and December issue, shot by Greg Kadel and Karl Lagerfeld respectively.

This year’s Fantasy Bra wearer and Victoria’s Secret Angels, Candice Swanepoel channeled 90s supermodel with easy nonchalant styling on the April issue, shot effortlessly by Mariano Vivanco (he also shot Andreea Diaconu‘s October cover). Fellow VS Angels Karlie Kloss and Doutzen Kroes also made cover appearance on the magazine’s February and September issues, photographed by Alexi Lubomirski and Tom Munro.

British model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who ended her contract for the famous lingerie brand in 2011 due to honoring a work commitment elsewhere, was featured on the important March issue of Vogue Spain. The British girl who starred in Transformers: Dark of The Moon and the current girlfriend of actor Jason Statham was snapped by Michelangelo di Battista. Her future work will be starring in the highly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road with Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and fellow model Riley Keough and Abbey Lee Kershaw.

The rest of the cover models this year are French catwalker Aymeline Valade for May (by Miguel Reveriego), and Russian vixen Irina Shayk for November (by Giampaolo Sgura).

Featured Article: Vogue Australia 2013 Covers Recap

First of all, we’d like to congratulate Vogue Australia on winning the coveted title of Cover of The Year at the Australian Magazine Awards 2013 for their February issue with Naomi Watts, who was shot beautifully by Will Davidson.

Naomi Watts is not the only non-models who graced the monthly fashion publication, because Edwina McCann also tapped movie director Sofia Coppola (shot by Paul Jasmin), singer turned fashion designer Victoria Beckham (by Boo George), and singer and model Erica Packer who was the second wife of Australia’s eighth richest man, James Packer (by Steven Chee). They graced the magazine’s August, September, and November issue respectively.

Vogue Australia gave the remaining cover slots to models, From runway veterans Carolyn Murphy, Lara Stone and Kate Moss, to the current models of the moment such as Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, and Arizona Muse, to sexy Victoria’s Secret bombshells Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr. They also hired different photographers for different issue. This year, the magazine have used the works of Regan Cameron, Angelo Pennetta, Miguel Reveriego, Arthur Elgort, Victor and Patrick Demarchelier, Benny Horne, and Nathaniel Goldberg on their covers.

This year, Vogue Australia used at least four different types of fonts for headlines, with their latest one—on November and December issue—being our favourite.

Our pick for the best covers from the magazine this year would be Naomi Watts‘s February, Kate Moss‘s July, and Arizona Muse‘s December issue. Despite the fonts inconsistency, Edwina McCann done quite a great work as Editor in Chief, and we are really looking forward to see what she’ll offer in 2014.

Featured Article: Vogue Korea 2013 Covers Recap

This year, Vogue Korea presented their covers in darker, more gloomy, yet soft and plain backdrops with mostly in grey tones (past years were mostly soft blue-ish). Their covers have the potential to be amazing line up (great casting, unique poses), but somehow they always went to their signature cold and pale color tones. We wish they brighen it up a bit with bold colored mastheads or headlines or styling.

They also have the tendency to have a repeating cover girl who snagged two slots in a year. Back in 2010 it was Sasha Pivovarova, while 2011 was Karen Elson, and 2012 was Arizona Muse. This year, the honor goes to Korean rising models Sung Hee Kim, Ji Hye Park and Soo Joo Park.

Sung Hee Kim, the former campaign girl of Miu Miu, landed the January and August issue, while Ji Hye Park (the Holiday campaign girl of Michael Kors) also featured on the January and August issue respectively. The edgy blonde Soo Joo Park (she’s the current face of Tom Ford, Chanel and Benetton) was the solo cover girl of the magazine’s June edition, and also featured on the anniversary issue together with G-Dragon.

There are two actresses (amongst mostly models) who graced the front pages of Vogue Korea this year. French actress Léa Seydoux who was brilliant in Blue Is The Warmest Color (the movie won Palme d’Or at Cannes 2013) graced the magazine’s May issue, shot by Tae Woo. The other actress was Jeon Ji Hyun or Gianna Jun on the September cover, who played in one of the highest grossing Korean comedies of all time, The Girl.

The top well known faces who graced the cover of Vogue Korea this year were Malgosia Bela, Joan Smalls, Daria Strokous, Doutzen Kroes, Kati Nescher, Saskia De Brauw, Lindsey Wixson, Miranda Kerr, Karen Elson, Aymeline Valade, and Arizona Muse. Which one is your favourite cover model?

Featured Article: Vogue Russia 2013 Covers Recap

We love how Vogue Russia always experimenting with different types of photography on their covers. Some might worked, some might not. But nonetheless, they always featured top models on their covers line up.

Victoria Davydova tapped homegrown models Natasha Poly (she landed the cover consistently every single year since 2007!), Sasha Pivovarova, and Daria Strokous as the 2013 cover girls. She also featured famous personality Dasha Zhukova who’s a Russian socialite, celebutante, philanthropist, entrepreneur, fashion designer and the editor-in-chief of bi-annual art and fashion magazine GARAGE.

Natasha Poly‘s minimalist image was shot by Patrick Demarchelier, while Sasha‘s red punk September issue was shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. Dasha Zhukova‘s cover was great, but too similar with some of the covers made by Interview magazine, and eventhough the layering on Daria Strokous was heavy, but we kinda liked it.

Some of top names in fashion photography have presented their signature shots for the magazine this year. From Hedi Slimane‘s black and white image on Lara Stone (the Creative Director of Saint Laurent also shot Suvi RiggsMarch issue, eventhough not in his signature B&W), Paolo Roversi‘s sophisticated color tone on Saskia de Brauw, to Vincent Peters clean cinematic shot on Maryna Linchuk.

Some other well known photographers who worked with the monthly fashion publications this year were Richard Bush who shot Joan Smalls for April and Anja Rubik for July; Claudia Knoepfel & Stefan Indlekofer for August issue with Karmen Pedaru; and last but not least Willy Vanderperre who photographed Daria Werbowy (with mullet hair) for October issue.

Featured Article: Harper’s Bazaar US 2013 Covers Recap

Glenda Bailey always featured word “fashion” consistently on Harper’s Bazaar US front pages. The word was the main headline in 2010 and 2011. Printed in big and bold manner. This year, the word made appearance in most of the covers. It’s their signature that needs to get rid of immediately. Oh, and they should also make the headlines smaller, not as big usual.

Harper’s Bazaar US started 2013 with an unflattering image of Jennifer Lopez. The 44 year old singer and actress was photographed by Katja Rahlwes for the cover. They could do better in our opinion, instead using the beauty shot. Another least favourite cover would be Selena Gomez‘s April issue by Terry Richardson. The stripes Dolce & Gabbana dress is to plain, dull and boring.

The controversial photographer Terry Richardson is Harper’s Bazaar regular photographer for several years now. This year alone he snapped the magazine’s August issue with Sofia Vergara for newsstand (one of our favourite) and Candice Swanepoel on subscriber version, September issue with Sarah Jessica Parker (enough with her already!), October issue with Miley Cyrus on the newsstand and Linda Evangelista on the subscriber, and November issue with Madonna. We are wondering what Terry‘s clients thinks about his sexual predator tendencies that’s (once again) surfaced on the internet.

The rest of the covers line up this year are our favourite! From Gwyneth Paltrow‘s regal beauty shot for May issue to Christy Turlington chic zebra styling for June/July issue, and Drew Barrymore gorgeous beauty profile on March to Kate Hudson bold red subscriber cover of December.

Versace Spring Summer 2014 Ad Campaign

When we first heard the rumour of Lady Gaga shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for Versace’s latest campaign, we are pretty sure that it’ll be the accessories line. The first image surfaced yesterday shown the American singer promoting the handbag. But then, the next image shows that the 27 year old also fronting the brand’s mainline campaign, channeling Donatella Versace (styled by Joe McKenna). What do you think about the ad? (source)
