Featured Article: Vogue Russia 2012 Covers Recap

Vogue Russia cover budget increased in 2012. They managed to tapped top photographers, two of them are fashion designers who also a photographer: Hedi Slimane and Karl Lagerfeld. Slimane, the new head designer at Saint Laurent Paris snapped Iselin Steiro and Daphne Groeneveld with his signature dark and moody image for the cover of the magazine’s March and April issue respectively. While Karl Lagerfeld—of Chanel, Fendi and his namesake label in case you didn’t know—tried something colorful for the December cover, featuring La Linda, in a Fendi yellow fur coat that looked so bright and catchy.

The Demarcheliers, Patrick and Victor, also landed cover job for Vogue Russia in 2012. The father shot the Dolce & Gabbana-clad models trio (Kate King, Anais Pouliot and Ming Xi) for February, while his son shot the October issue featuring actress Scarlett Johansson, who coincidentally also wears Dolce & Gabbana. And she looked good in it!

While the remaining photographers (Anthony Maule/January, Alexi Lubomirski/May, Cüneyt Akeroglu/June, Ellen Von Unwerth/August, and Mario Testino/September) were only shot one slot each last year, British born Richard Bush was lucky enough to secured two cover stints: July issue with Lily Donaldson (our fave), and November issue with Arizona Muse (her second consecutive year appears on the magazine’s front image).

The magazine already released their January issue with Lara Stone, and the editor in chief, Victoria Davydova, continues to work with Hedi Slimane as photographer. Yeah, she likes him that much because she gave him his third cover works in less than a year.

Featured Article: Vogue US 2012 Covers Recap

Most of Vogue US covers this year were great. Except Keira Knightley‘s October issue by Mario Testino. Camera loves her chiseled aristocratic face, but that metallic glove was really distracting and unnecessary. But, overall we are pleased with this year’s line up. We are excited already to see 2013 cover stars, because they’ve started the year with Gwen Stefani, and today there’s a rumour swirling that Beyoncé will be featured on the magazine’s important March issue, snapped by Annie Leibovitz few days ago. Just in time for her Super Bowl singing stint. Talk about perfect timing.

Anna Wintour gave five cover slots to first timers this year, and every single one of them wasn’t disappointed. Annie Leibovitz photographed Vogue US‘ oldest cover star, 63 year old Academy Award winner Meryl Streep for the earthy January issue (fellow winner and returning cover star, Marion Cotillard landed the August slot by Peter Lindbergh). She also photographed the then Olympic hopefuls from America, soccer player Hope Solo, swimmer Ryan Lochte (he’s now one of the few men who got the honor to be featured on the cover), and tennis player Serena Williams for June issue. Mario Testino shot two first timers: young singer Taylor Swift for February and the ever lovely Emma Stone for July. Last but not least, one of the most anticipated covers of the year was Adele‘s March issue, photographed stunningly by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.

Their 606-page March issue wasn’t the only issue we looked forward to. Because in September, they made history when they producing their biggest issue, ever! The 916-page edition was fronted by Lady Gaga, who wears Marc Jacobs purple patched dress and posed also in front of M&M‘s lens. The busy duo also produced the striking April cover, with Jennifer Lopez in a fiery red Bottega Veneta dress.

Scarlett Johansson goes blonde and wears vintage Prada dress on her second Vogue cover. The bombshell actress graced the May issue by Mario Testino. Rihanna also landed her second cover slot this year (as well as Lady Gaga). The Barbadian singer fronted the magazine’s November issue in Valentino, that was shot beautifully by Annie Leibovitz. Rounding up her work with Vogue US, Mrs.Leibovitz photographed the December front page with former Academy Award host, Anne Hathaway (in a green Vera Wang Spring Summer 2013 dress). And that makes her shared the spot with Mario Testino, who also shot four covers this year for the magazine.

Featured Article: W Magazine 2012 Covers Recap

W Magazine really blown us away with their amazing set of covers this year. From Mrs. Marcus Mumford, Carey Mulligan, who looks divine on the January cover by Michael Thompson; to Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron (she also graced her second cover this year on August, with her Prometheus co-star Michael Fassbender, by Mario Sorrenti) who looks glamour on the dual covers of February issue also by Mario Sorrenti; and one of the best covers this year featuring Ms. Kate Moss, as an angel and a sinner, photographed stunningly by Steven Klein for the March issue.

Jessica Biel promoting her wedding with a front page slot in the magazine for April, shot by Mikael Jansson. While fellow actors Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman was snapped by Emma Summerton for the May issue, promoting Hemingway & Gellhorn. Mega star Tom Cruise looked badass accompanied by top models Edita Vilkeviciute and Abbey Lee Kershaw, and photographed by Mario Sorrenti, for the magazine’s June issue. Just in time for him to let others know that Rock of Ages was released on the same month.

Another well known models who landed the coveted W Magazine slot this year are MTV House of Style hosts, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss. Their photoshopped version were featured on the July issue, snapped by Steven Meisel. The rest of the cover stars are all bright, talented and gorgeous! September cover girl was Penelope Cruz, by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott; October with Jennifer Lawrence by Tim Walker (great cover star, bad cover image), November with Keira Knightley, Mia Wasikowska, Rooney Mara, and Scarlett Johansson, all snapped by Steven Klein; and last but not least, December with Marion Cotillard by Tim Walker.

Featured Article: Cosmopolitan US 2012 Covers Recap

Finally Cosmopolitan US is changing for the better! The picked lovely first-timer cover girl this year to get more young and new readers (hello Dakota Fanning!), sexy returning cover girls to pleased regular readers (Scarlett Johansson and Megan Fox), and of course, they are welcoming the new editor in chief, Joanna Coles who’s replacing Kate White (she edited Cosmo for the last 14 year old, and stepped down to pursue her writing and speaking career) earlier this September.

50 year old Joanna Coles—she previously helmed Marie Claire US—did major changes on the newsstand cover with more multi colored headlines, cool new fonts, and bolder text placements (check out the layout differences between Selena Gomez‘s March and Taylor Swift‘s December issue). We love her decisions to did the makeover. In fact, her January 2013 issue with Carly Rae Jepsen is already the contender for next year’s best cover from Cosmo.

The rest of the cover stars this year are Pink, Khloe Kardashian, Demi Lovato, Lucy Hale, and the first model to graced their front page in a very long time, the IT girl of this year Kate Upton (the last four names are all first timers). Ashley Greene‘s August cover and Zooey Deschanel‘s October are our favourite this year. Hopefully Cosmopolitan US will keep their standards high and producing better images next year.
