Featured Article: Vogue Australia 2013 Covers Recap

First of all, we’d like to congratulate Vogue Australia on winning the coveted title of Cover of The Year at the Australian Magazine Awards 2013 for their February issue with Naomi Watts, who was shot beautifully by Will Davidson.

Naomi Watts is not the only non-models who graced the monthly fashion publication, because Edwina McCann also tapped movie director Sofia Coppola (shot by Paul Jasmin), singer turned fashion designer Victoria Beckham (by Boo George), and singer and model Erica Packer who was the second wife of Australia’s eighth richest man, James Packer (by Steven Chee). They graced the magazine’s August, September, and November issue respectively.

Vogue Australia gave the remaining cover slots to models, From runway veterans Carolyn Murphy, Lara Stone and Kate Moss, to the current models of the moment such as Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, and Arizona Muse, to sexy Victoria’s Secret bombshells Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr. They also hired different photographers for different issue. This year, the magazine have used the works of Regan Cameron, Angelo Pennetta, Miguel Reveriego, Arthur Elgort, Victor and Patrick Demarchelier, Benny Horne, and Nathaniel Goldberg on their covers.

This year, Vogue Australia used at least four different types of fonts for headlines, with their latest one—on November and December issue—being our favourite.

Our pick for the best covers from the magazine this year would be Naomi Watts‘s February, Kate Moss‘s July, and Arizona Muse‘s December issue. Despite the fonts inconsistency, Edwina McCann done quite a great work as Editor in Chief, and we are really looking forward to see what she’ll offer in 2014.

Featured Article: Vogue Korea 2013 Covers Recap

This year, Vogue Korea presented their covers in darker, more gloomy, yet soft and plain backdrops with mostly in grey tones (past years were mostly soft blue-ish). Their covers have the potential to be amazing line up (great casting, unique poses), but somehow they always went to their signature cold and pale color tones. We wish they brighen it up a bit with bold colored mastheads or headlines or styling.

They also have the tendency to have a repeating cover girl who snagged two slots in a year. Back in 2010 it was Sasha Pivovarova, while 2011 was Karen Elson, and 2012 was Arizona Muse. This year, the honor goes to Korean rising models Sung Hee Kim, Ji Hye Park and Soo Joo Park.

Sung Hee Kim, the former campaign girl of Miu Miu, landed the January and August issue, while Ji Hye Park (the Holiday campaign girl of Michael Kors) also featured on the January and August issue respectively. The edgy blonde Soo Joo Park (she’s the current face of Tom Ford, Chanel and Benetton) was the solo cover girl of the magazine’s June edition, and also featured on the anniversary issue together with G-Dragon.

There are two actresses (amongst mostly models) who graced the front pages of Vogue Korea this year. French actress Léa Seydoux who was brilliant in Blue Is The Warmest Color (the movie won Palme d’Or at Cannes 2013) graced the magazine’s May issue, shot by Tae Woo. The other actress was Jeon Ji Hyun or Gianna Jun on the September cover, who played in one of the highest grossing Korean comedies of all time, The Girl.

The top well known faces who graced the cover of Vogue Korea this year were Malgosia Bela, Joan Smalls, Daria Strokous, Doutzen Kroes, Kati Nescher, Saskia De Brauw, Lindsey Wixson, Miranda Kerr, Karen Elson, Aymeline Valade, and Arizona Muse. Which one is your favourite cover model?

Featured Article: Cosmopolitan US 2013 Covers Recap

Cosmopolitan hired new Editor in Chief last September and it brings quite a refreshing look on the covers. Joanna Coles (previously at Marie Claire) tapped quite a number of first timers on the magazine’s line up this year.

She picked Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen to front the January issue, American dancer and actress Julianne Hough for February, the controversial singer Miley Cyrus who landed not one, but two slots (March and December!), Colombian actress Sofia Vergara for June, British singer and TV personality Kelly Osbourne on July, Bulgarian born actress Nina Dobrev for September, and lastly Australian model Miranda Kerr for November. Our fave would be Carly Rae, Julianne, Sofia and Miley‘s December issue.

The returning cover stars this year were Kim Kardashian (April), Rachel Bilson (May), Demi Lovato (August), and Jennifer Lopez–our least favourite (October).

We are noticing that their headlines were more streamlined and in rather similar fonts towards the end of the year. Unlike the rest of the covers where they used more than 2 different fonts, which in our opinion is better suited for the mag. Could this trend continue in 2014? Let’s see next month.
