Featured Article: W Magazine 2012 Covers Recap

W Magazine really blown us away with their amazing set of covers this year. From Mrs. Marcus Mumford, Carey Mulligan, who looks divine on the January cover by Michael Thompson; to Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron (she also graced her second cover this year on August, with her Prometheus co-star Michael Fassbender, by Mario Sorrenti) who looks glamour on the dual covers of February issue also by Mario Sorrenti; and one of the best covers this year featuring Ms. Kate Moss, as an angel and a sinner, photographed stunningly by Steven Klein for the March issue.

Jessica Biel promoting her wedding with a front page slot in the magazine for April, shot by Mikael Jansson. While fellow actors Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman was snapped by Emma Summerton for the May issue, promoting Hemingway & Gellhorn. Mega star Tom Cruise looked badass accompanied by top models Edita Vilkeviciute and Abbey Lee Kershaw, and photographed by Mario Sorrenti, for the magazine’s June issue. Just in time for him to let others know that Rock of Ages was released on the same month.

Another well known models who landed the coveted W Magazine slot this year are MTV House of Style hosts, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss. Their photoshopped version were featured on the July issue, snapped by Steven Meisel. The rest of the cover stars are all bright, talented and gorgeous! September cover girl was Penelope Cruz, by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott; October with Jennifer Lawrence by Tim Walker (great cover star, bad cover image), November with Keira Knightley, Mia Wasikowska, Rooney Mara, and Scarlett Johansson, all snapped by Steven Klein; and last but not least, December with Marion Cotillard by Tim Walker.

Featured Article: Vanity Fair 2012 Covers Recap

Vanity Fair started this year with good covers such as the January issue featuring Lady Gaga by Annie Leibovitz, and a trio of Matt Damon, Daniel Craig and George Clooney for February, also by Mrs.Leibovitz. And then they produced the always exciting March issue, which featured top rising names in movie industry such as Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lawrence, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain, photographed with a vintage 1920′s feeling by Mario Testino..

..They falls flat with Julia Roberts on the April issue but then redeemed it with pleasant for the eyes covers in the following months with Julianna Margulies, Claire Danes, Sofia Vergara, Michelle Dockery (May), Marilyn Monroe (June), Kristen Stewart (July), and Alec Baldwin (August).

Vanity Fair sinking into the worst-covers-of-the-year hole with their September, October and November edition respectively that’s featured one paparazzi-like shot of Kate Middleton, one OMG-WTF-is-this image of Katie Holmes, and last but not least, one awfully taken snap of a smirking Daniel Craig, in front of a golden girl’s lady part. The subscriber cover from September issue with Jessica Chastain was quite decent, but it’s such a shame they didn’t used it as the main cover.

Thank God for Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott who shot supermodel Kate Moss to perfection for the magazine’s December issue. We’re really hoping that Vanity Fair would never, ever again producing front pages like those three worst covers this year.

Four Covers of W November 2012

UPDATED OCTOBER 16th 2012: The covers were photographed by Steven Klein with the styling works by Edward Enninful. Val Garland and Luigi Murenu were responsible for the make up and hair do respectively.

W Magazine choose four amazingly talented and beautiful actresses to grace their special 40th anniversary covers. Each actress is representing a decade on the cover: Keira Knightley (who looks superbly striking in blonde!) – the 2000s, Mia Wasikowska – the 1980s, Rooney Mara – the 1970s, and Scarlett Johansson – the 1990s.

The covers were photographed by Steven Klein and styled by Edward Enninful.

Rooney Mara, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain & Mia Wasikowska for Vanity Fair US March 2012

Quoted from VanityFair.com:

The first-ever Hollywood Issue cover shoot from Vanity Fair contributing photographer Mario Testino, a bevy of Hollywood’s most precocious beauties lounge across a three-panel foldout—including two new Oscar nominees.

The Art Deco set was designed to evoke the all-white, Jazz Age interiors of English decorator Syrie Maugham, whose clients included Bunny Mellon, Elsa Schiaparelli, and the Duchess of Windsor; Vanity Fair’s fashion and style director, Jessica Diehl, put the 11 cover starlets in pastel satin dresses and frothy feathers to lend a 20s and 30s boudoir feel.

Across the panels are actresses Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, Shailene Woodley, Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins, and Brit Marling.

Mara and Chastain—both featured on the front panel—were nominated for Academy Awards in January, Mara for her portrayal of cyberpunk hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Chastain for her supporting role in Tate Taylor’s Oscar heavyweight, The Help. (The Julliard grad also had starring roles in Take Shelter, The Tree of Life, and Coriolanus in 2011).

Miu Miu Spring Summer 2012 Ad Campaign

UPDATED JANUARY 17th 2012: Added two new campaign images photographed by David Sims via TFS.

UPDATED JANUARY 15th 2012: Added two new campaign images via TFS.

22 year old Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is looking more mature than her real age and we didn’t mean that as a compliment. To be honest these first preview from the upcoming ad didn’t interest us at all. But, we’ll wait til we see more images before made the final judgement.

What do you think of the campaign, guys?

W Magazine 2011 Covers Recap

This 2011 recap marks W magazine’s first full covers line up with new logo since they changed it September 2010 and their covers did not disappoints.

Stefano Tonchi‘s edited monthly publication chose actors Garrett Hedlund and Emma Stone to graced the January covers photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and then the magazine gave an exclusive first look of February cover girl, Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander (remember the tension between Vanity Fair and W about the cover star?) from the upcoming David Fincher‘s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The cover was photographed by Jean Baptiste-Mondino who also shot the April covers featuring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska.

Academy Award nominated actress, Mila Kunis heated up the March cover as she was photographed by Craig McDean in Eres silk bra and Chanel silk tulle organza coat. The British born New York based fashion photographer also lensed Mad Men‘s January Jones for the two covers of May issue. Academy Award winning actors, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks was photographed together by Mario Sorrenti for the June issue promoting Larry Crowne. The Naples born New York City based photographer also shot one of my favourite magazine covers ever, the December issue featuring the divine Dakota and Elle Fanning. Another Academy Award winning actress, Tilda Swinton, also one of the cover stars for W magazine this year. The 2008 winner of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role from Michael Clayton was lensed by Tim Walker for August issue.

Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott (the first was born in Turkey while the latter in Wales) photographed Kristen Stewart like we’ve never seen her before, winged tip eyeliner and boufant hair, for the important September cover while the October cover featuring In Time lead casts, Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, marked the returns of Michael Thompson for magazine cover in a long time.

W gave another slot of two different covers for July (Music & Style) and November (Art & Fashion) issues featuring one nude Christina Aguilera by Daniele & Iango, glammed up Beyoncé by Patrick Demarchelier, the rising model Sui He by Max Vadukul and the quirky Nicki Minaj by Francesco Vezzoli respectively.

Harper’s Bazaar Australia 2011 Covers Recap

10 issues. 12 covers. Half of the 2011 covers of Harper’s Bazaar Australia are “lying down” poses.

From the Giuliano Bekor photographed image of Jessica Alba beside a vibrant colored pool for January/February issue to the December cover (on sale November 14th) featuring the winner of the latest cycle of Australia’s Next Top Model, 18 year old Montana Cox, in bed of flowers and red sultry lips.

The gorgeous red haired Nicole Kidman looked lovely for the March cover lensed by Alexi Lubomirski. A really good reprint cover. Three bright young actresses from Down Under, Abbie Cornish, Alice Englert (daughter of Academy Award winning director, Jane Campion) and Rachael Taylor are featured for three different April covers of the magazine.

The always stunning Cate Blanchett landed the black, white and gold cover of May issue while Art‘s favourite model, Bambi Northwood-Blyth (and the hand of male model Jack Vanderhart) was photographed naked by Lachlan Bailey for the June/July front image of the magazine.
The 21 year old with her signature eyebrows landed two cover slots last year. Could she landed another one next year?

Mia Wasikowska also landed another cover for Harper’s Bazaar Australia. She was photographed wearing a Louis Vuitton Fall Winter 2011 sheer dress for the soft colored August cover.

A bright fuschia chiffon dress from Gucci Fall Winter 2011 was the choice of Harper’s Bazaar Australia team to be worn by 19 year old top model Karlie Kloss who was photographed for the September cover by Patrick Demarchelier‘s son, Victor. Usually I don’t like Alexa Chung covers, but this one by Angelo Pennetta for their October issue is quite lovely. Her cover for next month’s edition of Teen Vogue is really nice as well.

Last but not least,Simon Lekias photographed 28 year old Miranda Kerr in Mary Katrantzou Fall Winter 2011 structured skirt for November front page, one of my 2011 favourites. The mother of one is back from her maternity leave and landed the honour to wearing the $2.5 million Fantasy Treasure Bra in this year’s Victoria Secret Fashion Show in November.

Overall, the 2011 covers of Harper’s Bazaar Australia are better than last year’s. The new font and outdoor photographed covers are really worked this time. Looking forward for 2012 covers!
