Featured Article: Vogue Paris 2013 Covers Recap

Our concerned on Vogue Paris covers last year was their dull and boring grey/white backgrounds, which they applied in most of the issue. This year, they stepped it up a bit with some interesting outdoor settings. Even though they still used the basic colors as the background for half of the edition this year, but the remaining issues which was shot outdoor makes up for it.

First they have actress/model Milla Jovovich who was shot against Manhattan skyline by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. We love the sephia and black combination here. The team then headed to the mountains of Cuzco, Peru, to shot Isabeli Fontana in front of Mario Testino‘s lens, The issue was a special issue promoting Mario Testino‘s beautiful homeland. St. Barts was their next destination, as Mario Sorrenti photographed first-time cover girl Andreea Diaconu wearing nothing but sands all over her body. The last outdoor cover was featuring the ever sexy Edita Vilkeviciute, who wears Balmain in front of the iconic view of French Riviera. Mario Testino also photographed this strikingly vibrant image.

The rest of the covers which was shot against white and grey backdrops were featuring models Suvi Koponen, Freja Beha Erichsen, one of Vogue Paris favourite established cover girls Daria Werbowy, Saskia de Brauw (we love this!), and Gisele Bundchen. The magazine also photographed singer turned prominent fashion designer Victoria Beckham, and her dreamy husband, David Beckham for the last issue of 2013. It’s such a nice surprise to see the power couple channeling Gone With The Wind poster in front of Inez & Vinoodh‘s lens.

Featured Article: Vogue Brazil 2013 Covers Recap

From 12 issues that was published by Vogue Brazil this year, seven of them were fronted by Brazilian models. They consistently shows their support for homegrown talents, and that’s a good thing, especially these three models who they really love and support: Isabeli Fontana, Adriana Lima, and Gisele Bundchen. Those household names have graced the covers every single year since 2011. But, that observation was only from our recaps archives, perhaps they’ve graced even more.

Curitiba born Isabeli Fontana (30) was featured for the magazine’s September issue, posed in front of Jacques Dequeker lens together with American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Ben Harper, while the longest serving Victoria’s Secret Angel (since 2000) Adriana Lima, who was born in Salvador, Bahia 32 years ago, was photographed by Giampaolo Sgura for October issue. Featured Article: Vogue Mexico 2013 Covers Recap

Fashion and beauty photographer Koray Birand—who lives in Istanbul but splits his time between London, Paris and Munich—is branching out to yet another fashion publication this year. Having been a regular for Harper’s Bazaar Turkey since 2010, it looks like that he is now a favourite for Vogue Mexico and Latin America too, with 3 slots this year! He photographed the March, April, and October issues respectively with cover girls Isabeli Fontana, Hana Jirickova, and Princess Salwa Aga Khan aka Kendra Spears.

David Roemer, Nagi Sakai, and Marcin Tyszka also worked more than once for the monthly fashion publication. New Mexico born David Roemer shot the January and November issue with Jacquelyn Jablonski and Behati Prinsloo (both models participated in this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show). Tokyo born Cairo raised photographer Nagi Sakai snapped the magazine’s February and June covers with Toni Garrn and Mirte Maas, while Warsaw native Marcin Tyszka also shared the same amount of cover stint as the previously mentioned David Roemer and Nagi Sakai. He shot fellow Polish Anja Rubik and Zuzanna Bijoch on the magazine’s May and July covers.

That leaves us with Mariano Vivanco (Peruvian) who shot Candice Swanepoel for September issue, Alique (Dutch) who snapped fellow Dutch Anna de Rijk for August edition, Ruven Afanador (Colombian) who shot First Lady of Colombia for the magazine’s special cover for the Spanish speaking country, and rising duo Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello (both Argentinian) who photographed actress Scarlett Johansson for December issue.

Featured Article: Vogue Thailand 2013 Covers Recap

Besides Vogue Ukraine, Vogue Thailand is the latest international edition that was launched this year. Just like the Ukrainian version, Thailand Vogue also still trying to find their identity in the first year.

The magazine’s debut cover, shot by the renowned Hans Feurer, is one of the best premiere covers in Vogue history. The image shown model Si Tanwiboon wearing nothing but an intricate gold headpiece made by Philip Treacy. Another homegrown talent gracing the magazine’s cover this year was actress Aum Patcharapa, who posed in front of Tada Varich‘s lens wearing Dior.

The rest of the cover stars are top runway models. From runway veterans like Malgosia Bela, Carolyn Murphy, Naomi Campbell, and Isabeli Fontana, to social media Queens Coco Rocha and Karlie Kloss, to current established names like Liu Wen, Anais Pouliot and Kasia Struss. They posed in front of the lens from top photographers such as David Bellemere (the Russian born snapped 5 slots this year!), Lincoln Pilcher, and Marcin Tyszka.

An interesting note came from Naomi Campbell‘s November cover by Marcin Tyszka. The image sparked controversies when it was released last month because Naomi‘s skin had been heavily airbrushed and made to appear lighter. TFS reached out to Vogue Thailand for comment, and their Editor in Chief, Kullawit Laosuksri, sent back a statement. His remarks:

“The cover shot of Naomi Campbell was taken in Paris by Polish photographer Marcin Tyszka, whose signature style is pastel, with light (natural) soft colours created by using lighting techniques and make-up for his results. In his own words he explains, “Naomi is always super sexy – our idea was to create the Prada ‘60s look – more natural– pastel – sweet – soft.”

It was an incredible opportunity for me to work with such an icon as Naomi Campbell and we were so pleased that she agreed to grace our November cover. We chose Naomi because she represents a strong, intelligent and beautiful woman and we did not enhance or need to enhance her looks in any way.

We at Vogue Thailand believe in the universal beauty of women and I have had a chance to work with so many gorgeous women such as Liu Wen, Carolyn Murphy, and Coco Rocha as our cover models, and to be able to add Naomi into our portfolio is something that I am very proud of.”

The magazine has since released the final version of the cover, which shows the British supermodel with unmistakably darker skin.

What a way to start your first year.
