Featured Article: Elle US 2012 Covers Recap

We must appreciates Elle US editors decision to choose other color than white as the backdrop on their usually boring newsstands covers this year. The only interesting image with white backdrop was Blake Lively‘s March issue, but that’s only because of her strong pose. We are not loving Katherine Heigl‘s January, Reese Witherspoon‘s February, Rihanna‘s May, and Katie HolmesAugust issue, at all.

Their first attempt was dark grey background, for Jessica Simpson‘s naked April cover, and we are not impressed by it. They used bold red and combined it with Kristen Stewart for June, which kinda worked and interesting. Selena Gomez posed in a black and gold Dolce & Gabbana dress in front of summer-ish ombré blue background for July issue, while shocking pink was used for their September cover to matched Katy Perry‘s pink sequined dress from Bottega Veneta. One of the worst covers of the year nominees is Britney SpearsOctober issue. Oh, how we wished they’ve used different background color other than the dull grey, and less photoshop next time, please!

The November (there are 5 different subs covers and Kristen Wiig‘s is our fave!) and December covers with Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Lawrence are the best images with colored backdrop. We love how Alexi Lubomirski snapped SJP‘s perfectly flowing hair and Carter Smith did a good job capturing Jennifer Lawrence‘s subtle sexiness. Jennifer‘s subscriber cover is also one of the best subscriber covers that Elle US has ever produced.

Featured Article: Harper’s Bazaar UK 2012 Covers Recap

This year, the covers line up from Harper’s Bazaar UK are quite feast to the eyes. The color combination were lovely such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley‘s January issue by Tom Munro, Georgia May Jagger‘s March issue by Alexi Lubomirski, Victoria Beckham‘s May issue by Camilla Akrans, and Miranda Kerr‘s August newsstand cover by Giampaolo Sgura.

We also love the selection of their cover stars which were exciting i.e Cate Blanchett for April issue by Alexi Lubomirski, Florence Welch for July issue by Camilla Akrans, Keira Knightley for September issue by Ellen von Unwerth, Laetitia Casta and Joan Smalls for October issue by Sebastian Faena, Salma Hayek for November issue by Paola Kudacki, and Marion Cotillard for December issue by Ben Hassett.

Harper’s Bazaar UK didn’t amused us with their February and June issue. They got Uma Thurman and Cameron Diaz on the covers, but the magazine didn’t do any justice for both great actors. It was incredibly boring. They should’ve made far better covers with different art direction.

Overall, 2012 has been a good year for Harper’s Bazaar UK. Hopefully they will producing better covers next year. Especially after Justine Picardie took over the Editor-in-Chief position from Lucy Yeomans (she joined Net A Porter earlier this year) in August. The magazine was helmed by acting editor Jenny Dickinson of Elle UK for few months before Picardie took over the position. Dickinson will stay at the title as consultant editor until the end of the year.

Featured Article: Flare 2012 Covers Recap

Flare magazine’s Fashion Director Elizabeth Cabral styled most of the covers on this year’s line up for the Canadian monthly fashion publication. Well, that’s because three out of twelve front pages were a reprint.

Scarlett Johansson‘s May cover by Alexi Lubomirski was reprinted from the February 2009 issue of Harper’s Bazaar US. Michelle WilliamsJuly cover was a reprint from her editorial inside the December 2011 issue of Elle UK. Last but not least, Flare‘s December cover featuring Keira Knightley who’s promoting Anna Karenina, was photographed by Terry Tsiolis and published earlier in the March 2011 issue of Elle UK.

As always, Cabral did a great job with the styling for the magazine’s covers this year. She styled Canadian models Jessica Stam in a purple lace Tom Ford dress for January issue (Stam‘s second cover in just four months!) and Coco Rocha in Ashley Rowe vest, Joe Fresh bright orange skirt and Louis Vuitton strappy shoes for February cover.

Revenge star Emily VanCamp wears Emilio Pucci yellow embroidered dress for the March cover by Chris Nicholls, who also photographed Coco‘s cover. Nicole Richie wears Roberto Cavalli‘s gold paillettes jacket and matching skirt for the April cover, while model turned actor Brooklyn Decker wears Peter Pilotto‘s gorgeous sleeveless peplum dress for June issue. Both covers were photographed by Max Abadian who also snapped the total of 7 front pages this year! He also responsible for the covers that’s featured Jessica Stam, Rose Byrne (in Marchesa), Lindsey Wixson (in Prabal Gurung), Milla Jovovich (in Calvin Klein Collection), and Claire Danes (in Fendi)

Flare is always been our favourite magazine because they keep producing beautiful covers. We love most of their covers (even though they used three reprints this year) especially Stam, Decker, Wixson and Jovovich version. Feel free to the links and check out their 2011 and 2010 covers line up.

Featured Article: Numéro Tokyo 2012 Covers Recap

From ten covers of Numéro Tokyo this year, seven of them are featured the cover girls posing in front of plain backdrop (we didn’t count Candice Swanepoel‘s shadowy background). They brighten it up with multicolored, ombré, and clashing masthead and fonts. Some of them worked, some doesn’t.

For the cover models, they featured 1 singer turned successful fashion designer (Victoria Beckham), 1 model/TV personality/host (Alexa Chung), 1 former Estée Lauder spokesperson (Hilary Rhoda), 1 rockstar daughter (Georgia May Jagger), 2 current Victoria’s Secret Angels (Miranda Kerr and Candice Swanepoel), 2 models who walked Victoria’s Secret fashion shows (Lily Donaldson and Toni Garrn), and 2 household names in high fashion runways (Lindsey Wixson and Ginta Lapina).

Chilean born photographer Nino Muñoz snapped four covers this year (April, June, November and December), while Alexi Lubomirski (who was born in Wimbledon) and Horst Diekgerdes (born in Germany) photographed two covers each, January/February, September, March, and July/August respectively.

Fashion photographers Eric Guillemain and Angelo Pennetta shot one cover each in 2012 for the magazine. The former worked together with Lindsey Wixson for May cover, while the latter with Alexa Chung for October issue.

Our favourite cover from Numéro Tokyo this year goes to Victoria Beckham‘s March issue by Horst Diekgerdes. The colors are great and her side face shot is stunning.

Which one is your favourite this year, guys?

In our opinion, Elle US is one of the few publications who can made the 47 year old actress looks attractive on a magazine cover. Well, that’s just our opinion, because we love this November cover from Elle US, photographed by Alexi Lubomirski.

The issue will hit the newsstands on October 16th.

Salma Hayek for Vogue Germany September 2012

Well, this is quite random. Why does 45 year old Salma Hayek Pinault gracing the important September issue of Vogue Germany!? Does it have anything to do with her last name..?

Anyway, we kinda like the foggy and dreamy image snapped by Alexi Lubomirski, but not the layout.
